RFID in Libraries
The ability of RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) to read multiple tags at once and ability to read without line of site reduces repetitive tasks. Several books can be checked out or in at the same time. The speed benefits of RFID over barcode during check-in and checkout tasks are incremental as using a self service RFID station will speed service by a few seconds compared to barcodes. RFID dramatically speeds up shelf management activities. RFID reduces the time and effort of taking inventory, weeding and finding missing and out of order books. RFID enables more rapid updating of the library database enabling improved availability and circulation.
How RFID Helps Libraries
RFID Checkout Patrons place the checkout items on the checkout in the reading area and follow the touchscreen menu. The patron's card and their stack of books are read simultaneously.
Returns Drop books, CDs, DVS, audio tapes etc. in a traditional return chute fitted with RFID integrated with the library system. Items are automatically checked in.
Automated sorting - Sophisticated systems can take books from the return chutes, check them in, sort and distribute the books to multiple bins or areas for reshelving. Books are re-shelved in less time with less staff work.
Inventory materials without closing the library. Walking along the bookshelves with an RFID reader can capture data for automatically downloading into the library database.
Security RFID tags provide enhanced security as instant alarms (audile or visible) can designate if a patron passes through security gates with an item that has not been checked out. There is only one tag to apply which performs both the item identification and anti-theft function, saving application time.
